Shut off the main water valve before you leave on vacation:

The life expectancy of a rubber washing machine hose is three to five years, or less if it's exposed to direct sunlight.

When it fails, either at the coupling or from a blister, it will discharge 7 gallons per minute, or 600 gallons per hour.

Replacing the hose every 3-5 years is recommended- corrosion inside the coupling will not be visible.

Washing machine hose failure is a leading cause of home water damage, and a top ten homeowner insurance claim.

Have a Safe and Happy Fourth of July!

Mayflies in June...

...And June bugs in August? The first freeze of Winter '12 arrived in mid- September, and the cold and snow set record ice out dates this spring.

On June 21, Minnesota weather continued to test the resolve of its residents when a series of major storm clusters knocked out power to a half million metro area homes with gusts up to 60 mph. The storms also did significant damage to our urban forest, especially in the Longfellow neighborhood. Many streets throughout the city were flooded and impassable, and sinkholes appeared in Robbinsdale and Marshall Terrace. City crews are still working on clearing the massive amount of storm debris.

We're happy to report that- among our friends and neighbors- no one was hurt; although two of their homes sustained damage that ranged from slight to major repairs.

MPRB Curbside Tree Debris Collection:
July 1-12

"Park Board crews will collect homeowner yard tree debris that can be brought to the boulevard beginning July 1 through July 12 (excluding July 4 and 7) for properties affected by the storm. This service is for property owners clearing their property of tree debris after storm damage only—it is not for contractors doing work for property owners or for regular tree pruning. It is only for tree debris, not construction or other materials."

On another front, the 2013 Twin Cities housing market sure heated up in a hurry. Here's the latest Minneapolis Association of Realtor data:

    • New listings were up 26.2% overall
    • Traditional new listings were up 49.9%
    • Foreclosure new listings were down 15.4%
    • Short sale new listings were down 43.4%

"With 15 straight months of year-over-year price gains, multiple-offer situations and just 3.4 months supply of inventory, the market landscape that once favored buyers has tilted toward sellers."
