March 20: First Day of Spring

At this point all we're wishing for is a week to go by without a Winter Storm Warning, a blizzard, frozen pipes, or a school closing. This persistence of the Polar Vortex is like a vacuum cleaner that sucks even the routine out of routine. A simple thing like getting dressed to walk the dog takes longer than it's tolerable to be out there walking the little pooch.

It's as if we've become like that symbol of the 21st Century- the cell phone. At 23 degrees our batteries get temperamental. At 14 degrees some models shut down. At minus 4 Smart Phones stop working, and at minus 31 degrees all cellular phones quit. The only way to keep operating is under layers of clothing.

The bright spot is that we now have about two hours more daylight than at the December solstice, a sure indication that Spring will arrive someday- and the grass will never smell sweeter!

This Spring, the Twin Cities Real Estate market is expected to be very energetic because the regional unemployment is comparatively low and mortgage rates remain affordable at 4.45%. Although the January market figures exhibited Polar Vortex sluggishness, the appearance of improvement in the housing market is undeniable. This Spring may be a sellers market because New Listings and Time on Market have decreased, and Percent of Asking Price and Median Price are both trending upward.
